Fiji Lonely Planet Guidebook

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I've just bought the LP of Fiji which was last published in June 2000. Have accommodation prices risen much since then? Would like to know how much extra I should allow for accommodation compared with those quoted in the guidebook. Thanks.

Fiji
The Moon Guide to Fiji is far superior to the LP version. A new edition came out last year. I presume a new LP edition is due out sometime too.

Guide books
We used the Moon handbook (David Stanley) in our trip last September. We also shared it with people who had LP's Fiji.

The consensus was that the Moon book was better in it's descriptions of housing and food. LP has better maps.

Moon is more up to date but not in all cases. David Stanley's information on Octopus Resort was considerably out of date. While it was published in 2001 all handbooks are a year out of date when they come out.

LP had teams in Fiji when we were there collecting data for the new Fiji book. I talked with one team on Caqalai. The new LP book will be out next summer or fall. Note that the prices by then will be a year out of date.

I agree for now that the Moon Guide is far superior to LP's at the moment.

i like moon books more. beware that the fiji 2001 book was published before all the telephone numbers changed - there's an extra digit at the front of them all. i think it's 3 for suva - it seemed fairly logical, but given the quality of everything in fiji, it took ages before we stopped assuming it was a dodgy phone line and considered the numbers might be wrong! should be easy enough to find a quick refernce, or cross-check with something for teh places you are likely to want to call.

The Moon is great for Fiji but is poor for Tahiti/Fr. Polynesia.

The phone numbers in Fiji have changed to the following:

In the eastern part of Fiji - numbers that started with 2, 3 & 4 will now have a 3 in front of them.... 330-415 = 333-0415

In the western part of Fiji - numbers that started with 5, 6 & 7 will now have a 6 in front of them.... 670-415 = 667-0415

In the northern part of Fiji - numbers that started with 8 will now have another 8 in front of them - 870-415 = 887-0415

Check bulafiji.com to see what the current rates are on for accomodations

Prices have not gone up a whole lot - we are still trying to get caught up to pre-coup levels. Things are stable now...

Have fun...

I have just been to Fiji ( left on the 26th Jan ), and the LP was seriously out on some prices. Some Hostels were 50% higher than mentioned, others unchanged. A SERIOUS WORD OF WARNING. In Nadi there are some people who get tourists into a local craft shop, give you loads of Kava, give you a gift necklace, then push a very poor value village trip, also charging $55 for the 'gift' necklace. These guys are conmen and crooks, and do not give money or time to them. The shop is 'Na si Bula' I think. I had to get the police to sort them out.
