Fiji - marijuana and mushrooms

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hey,

what is the situation with purchasing marijunana and magic mushrooms on any of these islands? Are these two amenities available and what's the legal situation and crackdown level (should i stay away, be scared of, or not too worried)

thanks

If it's there now, it is fairly deep undercover: thus, highly illegal. I make this rather informal assessment based on my level and style of travel experience in other countries. As often as not, even when I don't want anything I find it being offered. But this didn't happen in Fiji ... ergo the inference about it being illegal/undercover. I didn't hit the nightspots in Suva, though, and there wasn't much of a foreign tourist presence to get the sellers (if they exist) out in the open ...

On the other hand, the ubiquity of kava drinking perhaps makes marijuana irrelevant (hallucinogenic mushrooms are in another league). Learn to drink kava and that's one solution for cheap legal recreational drug use. Won't be much in the way of mood changes but, with the resulting utter lack of motivation (or literal lack of ability to even move) after drinking kava, you won't care.

Most Indo Fijian cab drivers can hook you up with Marijuana easily enough, no guarantees as to quality though and penalties for possession are tough.

If you really need weed buy some, take it down a deserted beach somewhere smoke it all quietly and leave.

Never seen Mushrooms.

Kava is nothing like the nonsense as posted by #1-it's just a mild soporific that imbues as sense of conviviality on the drinker.

#2 ... I'm familiar with your style of posting here on TT, so I take no personal offense.

However, care to elaborate the so-called nonsense? Take the following into account: the amount of kava imbibed (specifically, you can control does to get as much or as little of the effect as desirted), the TYPE of Kava imbibed, and (not easy to recognize, admittedly) a certain irony in my style of communication, given the OP (and the OP's history of questions).

josenk, please keep in mind that dope growing/selling/smoking is causing HUGE social problems in Fiji. Village elders are tearing their hair out in frustration trying to deal with the young people seeing dollar signs because of travellers like yourself, who can't last a few weeks without being wasted. It is disrespectful to villagers to smoke within village confines, so don't do it. Take #2's advice and go somewhere quiet and private. If you get caught, you'll be "partying" in Suva prison, which is not somewhere I would like to stay. And, yes, there are a number of foreigners in there at the moment. My advice, save your smoking for home and see Fiji with respect..
