Fiji - Must Sees?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I'm taking my mum to Fiji for her 80th birthday - she used to live there and hasn't returned since 1956 so it will be a trip down memory lane for her. We are staying in Suva and will be there a total of 6 nights (1 night in Nadi). We will have a car.

Is there anything that we really shouldn't miss seeing? Anything of historic interest would be good as we are both history buffs. Mum isn't mobile enough for hiking, and doesn't swim, but this holiday isn't about laying about by the beach or pool.

Any info appreciated.

you could take her to the archives in Fiji and let her look at the newspaper for birthday or other significant day, and the museum is interesting. The Grand Pacific Hotel is nearly finished restoration and there is a new walk along the waterfront with seats, down near Fringing Reef. Take her to Eden for a meal, they have great pavlova and seafood and the yacht club has revamped their food as well. If she likes coffee take her to Bulaccino or Republic of Cappuccino, also the food court at Tappoo, you get some free parking with a purchase. These are places I'll be from mid Aug to October and of course the Saturday market. .

For WWII history Momi Bay Battery Historic Park is cool. Not too much to see as most guns, uniforms etc have been destroyed, but the care taker is an awesome tour guide who knows a lot about the history. We spent a few hours there chatting to him about the history of it all & looking at guns/bunkers/small museum... Theres also WWII Heritage Site (Bilo Battery Site). I haven't been there as it was closed when I attempted to visit. It's a few km's of winding mountain road to get to, which isn't my thing so I didn't re attempt to visit. If you do decide to visit Bilo, don't do the mountain drive if it has been raining heavily, the road is in really poor condition
