Fiji - Tent accommodation

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I'm visiting Fiji with my wife in March, just for two nights. We want to stay on a small island which we can walk around in half an hour or so, but we don't want to spend a small fortune and are happy to stay in a static tent as we're not worried about too many luxuries.

I've looked at a good few websites but they generally seem to only offer dormitories (but we'd prefer something more private) or bures which are very expensive. Can anyone recommend a small island that might be okay?

Generally putting up a tent costs as much as a dorm bed, sometimes almost as much as a bure.

Caqelai is said to have tents don't have the site to hand.

OTOH Caqelai is on the other side of the country and if all you have is 2 days you're buggered.

Your main problem is the lack of time. #1 mentions Caqalai. There's also nearby Leleuvia -- both off Ovalau island, just east of Viti Levu. Both would fit your wishes perfectly. Here's a link to Leleuvia.

Problem is: getting to either will cost a half day from Nadi. Just getting there and back and half your holiday time is gone.

For the more accessible Mamanucas or Yasawas, you'll either have small (of the walk around in 30 minutes variety) but very expensive islands, or larger islands with cheaper resorts, but which you cannot walk around. And you're still looking at a minimum half-day lost in transfer times.

Sorry, but you'll need to compromise your wish list...
