Fiji trip on a budget

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi,
My partner and I are hoping to go to Fiji around the beginning of August for about a week and want to fit in as much as possible. We would like to have a little beach time of course, but really would prefer to see as much as we can in the short amount of time.
We are not looking to spend too much, hostels and/or camping is fine, and would like to island hop if possible, which i've looked into, but can only find 7day passes. Is it better to book accommodation in advance or is it possible to rock up and see what's about?
Food wise, is it restaurants and cafes, or can we buy food elsewhere? Are the restaurants expensive?
This is really a last trip for us before we head home after 2 years of travelling, so any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers guys

If you ever get to the Coral Coast......make sure you try and get in to the Beach House.....its a backpackers, it's a really great place, with clean & comfortable rooms, great staff, and easy to get to, as there are buses regularly driving past there from Nadi

"Are the restaurants expensive?" Compared to.....?

Generally speaking, Fiji is not expensive due to the rapidly dropping value of the FJD. Prices are well below those in Australia for instance.
