FIJI tsunami warning eta

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi, according to an update on the Fiji Times ...

A TSUNAMI warning was in effect for Fiji this morning after a magnitude-8.3 earthquake in the Samoa Islands region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said sea level readings indicated that a tsunami was generated which may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre.

It said where no major waves were observed for two hours after the estimated time of arrival, local authorities can assume that the threat has passed.

Fiji's initial tsunami arrival time had been placed at 8.03am. 30 Sept.2009

some people just love the drama......

I think it has been canceled. And Bob1971- it's nly drama when it doesn't happen. In Samoa, it happened.

yup cancelled there this morning. sounds like samoa was really clobbered and tonga also has pretty serious casualties. numbers are rising fast and will in the next 24 hours due to a pretty fragile communications system and limited press to report things. not good.

3

Tonga? Haven't haard about what has happened in Tonga- could you let us know?

4

I logged in here to learn if tsunami warnings had been issued for the other islands .. nice to read that people were in fact alerted.

Unfortunately, just like the SE Asia tsunami, it'll take few days to understand the scope of the damage and human loss.

This seems like deja vue, similar to the quake and tsunami that devastated the Western Solomons a couple of years ago.
