fiji volunteer work

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi,
Im wondering about some volunteer work in Fiji. I have a Bachelor in development studies, so have qualifications for community development and gender related work etc. but im also happy to volunteer in an orphanage or school. My partner will be doing some anthropological research there from jan - july and i will come along, i just want to do something worthwhile with my spare time.

Also, as i will be volunteering, how much does it cost to live basically in fiji?
Any ideas??

thanks!

Chances of getting paid work are almost nil. I don't think you can really arrange any volunteer work in advance. Best bet is to just familiarize yourself with the area you'll be living in via web research, and maybe study some basic Fijian (and Hindi) phrases, etc. Churches are one avenue to check out for volunteer work after you arrive. Living costs are not that high. Housing might be the most expensive thing, but if you'll be there 6 months you can probably rent a house etc.. If you cook instead of eat out a lot, it won't be more than it would cost to live at home. Taxis and public transport are cheap.
