Fiji Vs Thailand

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Last year I spent a couple of weeks with the boys in Thailand and loved it. This year me and my wife are looking to head overseas but after hearing some of the stories of the filthy cities etc and also because she doesn't want me to go to the same place twice shes looking at Fiji as a next option. How would your compare the two?

I like the beaches and snorkeling on the islands of Thailand, and really liked the food. Being a atypical cheapskate Thailand was a dream and I managed to get by with around $1000AU for around 2 weeks, all expenses included (well maybe not suits..). So with those things in mind would you say Fiji would be a good next stop? Or maybe give me a better suggestion.

Cheers,
Mik.

Actually just having a little think about it I think I can sum up Thailand as "I could live it up for cheap". That being quite different from being a cheap place, we staying on great islands, right on the beach and in great bungalos and it was cheap. It seems when you say cheap to most ppl they say 'hell yeah you can stay cheap in Fiji' but they are generally talking hostels etc.. anyway, yer still looking into Fiji and the islands in that area.

Both regions have wonderful qualities. I personally find the beaches of the S. Pacific to be much more pristene and less crowded than their Thai counterparts, for the sole reason that many millions more tourists visit Thailand.

The Pacific may not be as cheap as Thailand, but on the world scheme of things it can still be quite accommodating for the tightwad.

Costwise, Fiji is nowhere near as cheap as Thailand, but it is a beautiful country, filled with great people. If cost is the main consideration, I'd look elsewhere in SE Asia..

The 2 places really are not comparable.

Costwise Thailand is much cheaper. The beaches are quite different , with those on the Pacific being VERY uncrowded and also much cleaner.

Its like comparing the beaches of say Lorne or Bondi with those of the 90 Mile Beach in Vic or the far NW of Australia.
