First Trip to Vanuatu for my Mom and I !!!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hey there,

My mom and I are flying to Sydney tomorrow night and then fly onwards to Vanuatu on 9 July.

We want to fly to Tanna and stay there for 5 days or so...from there we would love to carry on to Ambrym to take part in the cultural festival, but we do not know how to get there yet.

Also, in the lonely planet is sais that sometimes they have food shortage on the Island of Ambrym and that you have to take enough water for yourself and the guide... is that true? And if so, how do you know if the water is enough?

Or do you have any general tips, recommendations, help advise?

Thank you very much and really looking forward to your replys,

Greetings, Lisa

Hi, Lisa,
I'm familiar with Solomon islands rather than Vanuatu, but both countries are culturally similar.
If you think they may be short of food on Ambrym, or if you will be staying with locals, I would be inclined to take a 5kg or 10kg bag of rice, which you should be able to buy in any town. This is a popular staple with locals, and means they could have a couple of days without digging their gardens for root vegtables, and would help if there is a drought, or other natural reason for a food shortage. You should also be able to buy 2 litre bottles of water.
If you are flying, though, it will be by small plane, so don't carry too much luggage.
