Fishing and Spearfishing on Mitiaro and Mauke

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Does anyone have a good local contact for blue-water fishing and/or reef spearfishing on Mauke or Mitiaro? I'll bring some new 500-lb handlines & tackle for trolling or old-style rock & leaf fishing as an incentive.

Ian Guinea may still live on Mauke. He had a small gamefishing boat several yrs ago, and did a bunch of fishing offshore. Very nice guy.
Not sure how to reach him, except maybe by snail mail. Just write "Ian Guinea, Mauke Island, Cook Islands, South Pacific".

You may be able to get in touch with him via e-mail to Tiare Holiday Cottages on Mauke. He has no connection with them, but Tautara's family can probably get a message to him. I would guess Ian is on e-mail somehow, but not sure. You can check oyster.com and see if Telecom has an e-mail listing for him.

Even if you e-mail ANYONE on Mauke, they'll get a message to him!

On Mitiaro it's a bit different, as no real large boats. But the locals do go out into the ocean in the standard 5m or 6m aluminium open boat almost every day/night except Sunday.

For both islands, bringing handlines and tackle and lures for that would be good. Yuo might be able to do some surfcasting off the reef on each island, but I'm not sure how successful that would be.

One unique thing to try is to go along with the locals on a night fishing trip to catch flying fish, using a hihg-held lantern and a net to catch them when they fly towards "the moon"!

I don't have current contacts on Mitiaro. Contact the CI Tourist Office and see who is hosting guests these days. Then you can check on fishing options with your future host.

No really much reef spearfishing on either island, as no real lagoon, and when you get maybe 200m offshore it's about 4000m deep!

Have fun!

Contact Tangata Ateriano at Tiare Holiday cottages, he should be able to put you in touch with a local fisherman on Mauke. Try E-Mailing at te4ta@mauke.net.ck.

On Mitiaro you can stay at Ngatoa Lodge, contact Vivian Vandongen, she gave me an E-mail sddress of vivian@oyster.net.ck, but I have not been able to reach her on it. She runs a small market near the CICC church and should know someone you can join for a fishing trip.

Good Luck, hope they are biting!!
