Flying to Tongatapu to Vava'uCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hi, I am due to travel to Tonga next month to go sailing. We have flights booked with Air Fiji from Nuku'alofa to Vava'u but I have just found out I am pregnant and am concerned that the small aircarft will be unpressurized. Has anyone done this route and can tell me a bit more about it or alternatives airlines. My doctor has told me that flying is fine but the aircarft needs to be pressurized. Thanks for your replies.
Flying domestically in Tonga you have a lot more to deal with than a worry-wart doctor. | 1
They are not pressurised, but they also did not seem to go that high. I think they were around 3500 ft, maybe a bit higher. From TBU they go to Haapai, only an hour or less, so they aren't heading up too high. Sam efrom there to Vavau. You might be able to e-mail them and see what alt. they usually are at, but they are notorious for not replying to e-mails. You could check with your doctor---or even two doctors---to see what altitude could be damaging. But would they also warn you not to hike in 5000 ft high mountains? | 2
Most passenger jet aircraft are pressurized to an equivalent altitude around 7,000 ft or so, not sea level. So if it's OK to fly a normal passenger jet, I'd say an unpressurized flight to 7,000 ft. or less should be OK. In the US it's legal to fly to 10,000 without oxygen or a pressurized cabin. | 3
