Gahavisuka Park and Caves near Kundiawa and Chuave

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Can anyone give some informations about the Gahavisuka Provincial Park near Goroka which is described in the LP? How long is the trip from Goroka to the park and how are the road conditions?
On the way from Mount Hagen to Goroka there shall be some caves: Near Kundiawa and then further on near Chuave the Keu Caves with the Nambaiyufa amphitheatre? Does anyone know anything about these places?
With a group of around 15 people - what is the best thing to do in Goroka for one complete day sightseeing?
Thanks a lot.

I visited Gahavisuka about two years ago. It is about 25 minutes out of Goroka to the turn off and then almost an hour walking (depending how far your transport will take you). the road was undrivable after about 1 km at the time. However the forest was great as were views from the top.

In Goroka, the market is worth a visit as is the museum. It's a good place to pick up souvenirs, (paintings, spears, bilums, carvings etc). the lawn bowling club is a hoot and great place to connect with some locals. they will make you feel at home if you ask for advice on how to play the game.

From Kundiawa a trip up to Mt Whilhelm is special. Allow a couple of days to enjoy the cool, village ambiance and a walk up to the lakes. Kegsuglu guesthouse was a good place to stay if your happy with backpacker style accommodation.

Hope you enjoy the experience
