Getting around by boat

Hi, very general area. Not sure which country to post under. I'm looking to travel around the Pacific Islands but have a fear of flying. Sounds silly but i really want to visit this area but would love to do it all by boat. Am looking to spend upwards of 4 months in the islands (should be enough?) as part of my RTW overland tour (starting and ending in the UK). Does anybody know whether moving around by boat/ferry is a viable option. What about buying a longtail!?

There are VERY few viable international boat connections (PNG - Solomons, Vanuatu - New Caledonia, Samoa - American Samoa) in the region, so the main options are taking a cruise (boring and expensive) or crewing on yachts (unless you have your own).

Basically, if you want to travel around extensively and go where/when you like, you should be prepared to fly.

Travelling around by boat WITHIN each country is a much more viable option though.<blockquote>Quote
