Getting around the islands in French PolynesiaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Anyone one knows the ins and outs of getting around the islands in French Polynesia cheaply and easily? One can fly but it is expensive and not so frequent, and how about the ferries? What about package deals or what kind of tickets should I purchase if I want to hop back and forth from say, RAIATEA or TAHITI, to MO'OREA, BORA BORA, HUAHINE, MAUPITI, RANGIROA, or TIKEHAU?
It has been awhile since I went to French Polynesia (2004) but I used the ferries.....especially around Tahiti, Moorea, the ferries are quite frequent and probably the cheapest. Same with Huahine and Bora Bora. I always bought the ticket right before departure. Enjoy it !!! | 1
The best way to get up to date information is to check out the forums at www.tahiti-explorer.com - I am sure someone there will have answers for you. | 2
The ferries are more infrequent than airlines, excepting only the Tahiti-Moorea routes which are well served by several ferries. The outer islands get service by cargo boats that carry passengers. Some islanders get around this way of course, but they are slow, don't adhere to a schedule very tightly and you won't save much money. The ferry between Bora Bora and Maupiti for instance, was stopped by rough weather 4 out of the 7 days I spent on Maupiti. IMHO Air Tahiti has the only real option unless you have unlimited time or money. With time you can make the ferries work, with money you can charter a King from Air Archipels. Ed | 3
