Globe trotting

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi

I live in the UK and am about to go globe trotting. First stop is Oz where I plan to work and travel for a year before heading on to NZ and the pacific.

I've already got a good idea about what I need to do but would be extremely grateful for any advice from people who can help.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,
Im not sure where you are first intending to stop in OZ, but a common misconception is that we are are hot country ( in my experience) I have have met a lot of travellers from the UK who have headed south in Australian winter and have been disapointed so if you are chasing the sun be sure to check to Aussie seasons state to state, region to region as the vary GREATLY! I know this sounds obvious, bt it's extraordinary how many people show up in Sydney( my home) in May, June, July , August and are shocked at the cold. So as a general rule Uk spring and summer always head to the far north of Australia( The Tropics)

Hi sstephen1!

Welcome to TT!

Probably you posted in this branch by mistake but there's a specific branch that covers Australia and NZ and therefore where you are more likely to get more and better answers to your questions. It would be a good idea to (cross-)post your thread in the Australia, NZ and Antarctica branch.

Hi,
I did a similar year of globe trotting in South America, Asia and Austrialia/New Zealand. You wont regret it.
If you are asking specifically about New Zealand I would say that you can get a good trip in 6 weeks if you have the time and 2months would definitely allow you to see most interesting things in the country. I spent 6 weeks there with a campervan and travelled around both islands and I feel saw everything I wanted to see. Obviously it depends on how much money and time you have but for longer trips I think a campervan is worth the money with Wicked and Spaceships the budget options. There are buses such as kiwi experience as well that have a hop on hop off.
In the Pacific I only went to Fiji and as a suggestion if you are going there, heading to the islands is nice but make sure to get away from there as the rest of Fiji is very poor compared to the tourist islands west of Nadi.
If you want info on New Zealand I wrote 3 posts on my website about both islands detailing all the information I did, maps, costs etc

I hope this helps
Ross
