GUAM....there is cheap HOSTELS AND FOOD there???Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hi LP Amigos : I am planing a trip to Guam, and want to know if anybody can advise me about CHEAP places to stay and eat while in Guam. If is possible to visit the local culture without renting a car? Gracias from Peru Edited by: RobertoViajero
I was just in Guam last weekend. We went on a flight/hotel package, so I can't tell you about cheap accommodation, but there is cheap food to be had once you get away from the main drag. Even on the main drag, there is cheap (by first-world standards) Vietnamese, Thai, etc. If you find an authentic Chamorro restaurant, please post it on TT, because we didn't (we only had three days, and we were diving as well). "Local culture" in Guam is a loaded concept--it's an American territory, and it has been quite Americanized for better (higher standard of living) or worse (hordes of tourists, fast-food joints, a lot of cars). The Chamorro Village is a tourist-geared collection of shops, food stands, craft workshops that is just down Hwy. 1 from the main drag; perhaps you can take a bus there. Apparently Wednesday nights are popular, but we didn't make it there. If you want to experience the real real local culture, you'll need a car. But the southern loop only takes 2 hours driving straight on through, so with stops, you can easily do it with only a one-day rental. We generally went to WWII-related sites, and stopped at local stores--it was a pleasant afternoon. | 1
