Hiking & Tramping

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I'll be tramping in New Zealand, and then moving on to Hawaii for more of the same. Are there any islands in the Pacific that can run with NZ and Hawaii in terms of the quality and beauty of the hikes? I am looking for 3+ days unsupported treks.

If you were willing to take a guide, then you could find some unique and very scenic hikes in Vanuatu.

Papua New Guinea seems to have an abundance of good hikes, judging by the LP guide (1998) on it I got recently. They also do a specific Bushwalking in PNG guide. Pretty wild place though - you'd need guides on a lot of the routes.

Indeed, PNG is the place to go for hiking in this region!

I'd recommend New Caledonia as a very distant second.

Sorry I should have been clearer before. Coming from Indonesia, I was not interested in PNG since I can always do that country's side of that island. What I meant was: What Pacific islands besides the island of New Guinea warrants a detour or a visit due to its compelling hikes/treks?
