Honeymoon in August 2007- Octopus Resort?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi everybody!

We're trying to plan our August 2007 honeymoon and we need some advice. We're looking to spend 3-5 days doing low-key, warm water scuba diving where there are great soft corals. (Its something we've been dying to do for a while). We also want to do some exploring--see some volcanoes, do some hiking in jungles, cave tours...who knows? We've been looking at Octopus Resort for part of our stay but had some questions:
1) What's the diving like there? It looks like there's great snorkeling off the beach, but is the diving good?
2) Does anyone know if the dive prices quoted on the website include boat trips, etc. or just the gear?
3) Any other suggestions about where to go in the Pacific Islands or elsewhere?

The Taveuni resorts look great but seem a little out of our price range once it all tallies up. We're looking to keep it under $5000, including airfare. And spend somewhere between 10-14 days on vacation. Since it's our honeymoon we thought we'd try and stay in a nice hotel/resort for part of the trip and do more budget traveling during the rest of the trip. Indonesia is looking pretty nice too but I can't get my head around a good itinerary.

Any suggestions would be great!

Check the posting a bit lower on the page -- on diving the Astrolabe reef off Kadavu. Looks like a good lower-budget option for Taveuni. Which Taveuni resorts have you checked out? There's one at the south tip of the island -- formerly Susies Plantation but now under new ownerships and a new name I can't remember. They've moved seriously upmarket, but might still be lower than the resorts at the north end.

For the budget end, and if you also want a good location for hiking, a bit of local culture/history, apparently some good diving, and also a couple of small lagoon island resorts, Leleuvia and Caqalai

have a look at Ovalau island.
