Honeymoon in Fiji? Samoa? Vanuatu? Malaysia?!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

We are looking to go on a week or two honeymoon starting in early February 2009. Currently very open as far as where we go and anything from Thailand to Fiji to Samoa to Vanuatu. We're based in Sydney and are looking for the following:

  • reasonably priced (meaning staying somewhere nice / private / on beach but nothing too fancy or additional).
  • warm / not raining
  • beaches / swimming
  • fishing (a definite focus)
  • snorkling
  • in touch with locals / culture
  • few activities to do but also time to sit on beach

I know this probably describes a great many places but guess we don't want to pay massive amounts so even just a few ideas of where to start looking. Heard good things about Fiji? Quite happy to stay at one or two places. My partner has done a fair bit round thailand so preferably somewhere different. Are packages worthwhile? I've only every done active backpacking type holidays where you book as you go so this is out of my league! Even specific ideas about certain islands / resorts would be so much appreciated. Hard to organise a honeymoon on top of a wedding!

Thanks so much.

With "reasonably priced" topping the list of priorities, it would really have to be Malaysia.

Even the cheapest South Pacific countries, Fiji and Samoa, would cost at least twice as much for the same things.
Otherwise, my vote might go to Vanuatu - but it is the most expensive country on your list!

It can get rainy in Fiji and Samoa and Vanuatu in February. Alternates between quick runs of rain, then sun, then rain, a few days each week. But Fiji is a good place to have some variety. Not as cheap as SE Asia, but can be one of the cheaper places in the South Pacific.

It is the wet season in the south Pacific then, so as Raro says - you could have a bit of rain and it is likely to be humid. It can get hot in Sydney too though so perhaps that isn't a big deal. I haven't seen much of Fiji but I like both Vanuatu and Samoa. Samoa would be more laid back because it is so easy to get around and see things, but Vanuatu has lots of interesting things to see. As Laszlo says, that is the most expensive option. Have you thought about the Philippines? Lots of islands to give you some diversity, easy to travel and not expensive.
