How expensive is vanuatu? How does is compare to Fiji?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

We are going on our honeymoon in October this year. We are looking to go to either Vanuatu or Fiji. But we are hearing things like $45 for a steak and $14 for a beer in Fiji and then Vanuatu is more expensive! Also where are the best places to stay in either place?

Vanuatu is considerably more expensive than Fiji, but both can be cheaper than the prices you've heard would suggest.
You'd pay such prices at the resorts, I think. If you can live a bit more like a local, you could eat and drink for much less.

Places to stay?
Way too many to list here - how about opening a guidebook?

The info you provide, eg about "hearing things" doesn't help much. What is the context? The cost of a beer in Fiji, even in expat bars and yacht clubs, was around FJ$ 2 or less -- I never concerned myself with exact price since it was so low, even for budget level travel. I can't imagine where the figure of $14 comes from, unless it's indeed what a person has to pay at an upmarket and isolated resort somewhere. I have to admit that I didn't eat any steaks in Fiji ... but steak would possibly be imported and again found at high end resorts. Basically, if you want what you can get back home, you'll have to pay extra for it.

If you shopped around and compared costs at several resorts I'm sure you could do a lot better than what some of those prices imply.
