how much time in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Greetings everyone,

I'm thinking of heading your way and am heading just what sort of time I should give myself in Fiji.

I'm have no interest in lounging around on beaches, so I don't care about visiting places just because there's a nice beach there. I don't mind a bit of hiking every now and then. In some respects, I think that if I've seen one gorgeous beach, then I've seen them all. However, I stand to be corrected.

So, allowing for that, how much time should I allow in Fiji? A couple of weeks?

Thanks,

Peter

So what do you want to do?

Snorkeling?

Kayaking?

Fishing?

Hiking?

Surfing?

Scuba Diving?

Cheers for replying.

Well, I'd like to do things in Fiji that I can't do anywhere else on this planet.

I'm not into fishing and unless there's something really unique about the other things you mention, then the only ones that slightly appeal are the snorkeling, hiking and scuba diving.

I'm more into meeting the locals, and experiencing local life. That's one nice thing about couchsurfing, as with the right host, then one can get away from tne touristy stuff.

Of course, some touristy stuff is so for a good reason. I notice that there are no world heritage sites in Fiji, but there's got to be something about the history etc.

Ta in advance.

"do things in Fiji that I can't do anywhere else on this planet" only thing be meet fijians in there villages and experience there genuine hospitality, but you got to get away from the turist track....

I have serious concerns about couchsurfing in a developing country. You may get to stay with relatively well-off locals or expats, but to see the real rural Fiji, it is important that you make a contribution (money or food, at least) to the village where you are staying. They depend on this to look after you.

Thanks both. The world heritage link is really interesting. If I do go to Fiji, visiting Levuka seems a cert to visit.

Yeah Ozziegiraffe: I understand your concerns about cs'ing in developing countries. So far, my experiences have been really great. Touch wood for the future.

Can anyone advise me how to get decently priced flights from New Zealand to Los Angeles, that allow a stopover in Fiji.

Thanks again.
