How to get from Indonesia to Palau now that Continental doesn't fly to Guam

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I live in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and would love to fly over to Palau for long weekend to visiting a friend from Hawaii who's doing some consultancy work there. Its a last minute trip, and I can't believe how impossible it is to find flights. A few years back I would often fly the Honolulu-Guam-Denpasar route, but that too seems to be non-existent these days. Can it really be so difficult to go such a short distance? Any thoughts about how to do it via Australia because Air Asia has some good prices on flights... please, words of wisdom from my Pacific Island friends????

Doesn't fly to Guam from where? From Depesar? Anyway, I'd try to fly to Manila then on to Palau. Surely that is less time consuming than flying down to Australia and back. And the flights from Palau to Indonesia used to go through Guam- completely royal pain as you would then stop to refuel in Palau but couldn't get on or off. And YES it can really be so difficult to go such a short distance..

I am not sure if there even are any flights to Palau out of Australia.

I think you have to go through Guam. You can get to Palau from Manila and taiwan. They keep trying to install other airlines but few figure out who you have to pay off royally to get them in.

There used to be flights from Australia to Palau via PacficFlier (http://www.pacificflier.com/), but they recently suspended operation (they claim temporarily, but who knows?). So now you will need to go through Manila.
