I'm London based & looking to go to the Marshalls - (Kwajalein Atoll, Roi-Namur, Carlson Is) I understand I can take small island hopper flights in between these places What I want to know is how would you go there from an international route? Via the US? Or via Philippines? Or via Oz? Thanks
From London, flying via the US with Continental is pretty much the only way to go. | 1
And I don't think you can go to Kwaj as a civilian. You can stop there, but are not allowed off the plane unless you have official business- meaning mostly US military business. And Laszlo is pretty much right- you would get to Guam however, then take the Continental Air Mike island hopper towards Hawaii- stops in Truk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, then on to the Marshalls. Alternately you could go west and take off from Hawaii. | 2
Oops- just saw the last question. From London we got a cheap ticket to the Phillipines but at that time Air Nauru was going so we could hop from there to Pohnpei. Would NOT go to Oz. You can get to Guam from several places including Taiwan and Japan. Depends on whether money is an issue. From there it is Air Mike all the way. It takes some working out to get decent fares, especially from Europe. Sometimes you can get good fares from Manila to Honolulu or even to London on Air Mike, with a stopover in the Marshalls. If money is not an issue, just look into Continental- you'll end up on it anyway. And although there are startup companies that sometimes fly into and out of different places in Micronesia- be careful if your trip isn't quite soon since they disappear regularly. | 3
Thank you very much - I knew one of you 2 would come up trumps - didn't expect 'double bubble' mind! Thank you both. I think I am going via Guam, as I have a friend there, & I want to dive the wrecks there. Seems a good time to fit it in, en route. And you are quite correct about Kwaj - but I have an offer to be sponsored to allow me to get out. | 4
Having flow in and out of Kwaj it is a very odd place- looks a lot like a midwestern US town dropped into the middle of the pacific. And of course they keep shooting missals from California. And they are formally on California time. Very odd indeed, but if you can, by all means let us know what it is like. Was amused by the LP description of the lagoon there- completely unlike the description of any other lagoon in the Pacific- populated by awful sharks and just nasty.Of course it is filled with "interesting" stuff...... | 5
