Idiots Guide to the Pacific

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I have seen pictures but in reality I know nothing about the pacific and I am considering doing a trip in November/ December this year.

I am not one for flee ridden cheap but I am a back to basics girl.
(I also don't mind splashing out and treating myself for 2 or 3 nights if there are recommendations of a to die for property!)

What would you say was your number one place to visit in the pacific was?
I am open to anything. I am going to research places and then try to connect the dots!

Enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

Don't know where your travels will eventually lead, but if its anywhere in the Polynesian triangle, here's some very helpful information.

The podcasts can be downloaded now for free.

I always think traveling is much more rewarding when I know something about a place before I get there.

I vote for Solomon islands, as it has all 3 Pacific cultures in one country - Melanesian, Polynesian and Micronesian, offers largely untouched culture as well as some of the best diving in the world. There are one or 2 top resorts, but most people stay at less opulent places. My preference is for the less touritsy areas, and rest houses favoured by the locals.
However, you really need to do some research, let us know your interests, and come back with specific questions, including some idea of time frame and budget, and where you will be coming from (Europe, Asia, America, Australia??).

The Cook Islands... for me it typifies a South Seas paradise.

You can get there, from most places, relatively cheap. You can find reasonable lodging for $50-150 USD a day, eat for $30/day, and rent a scooter for $20/day.

Inter-island travel is expensive at $300-400 return but each island is worth at least a week's stay.

My favorite is Mauke.
