Island Hopping?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

hi,

is it possible to reach Papua New Guinea via boat from Far North Queensland, Australia ?

and also, is it viable to travel from PNG through to Indonesian Island via boats ?

my uncle travelled the entire area on a Yacht back in the 80's ... sounds amazing

izzit still possible?

That AU to PNG route is practically for locals (TSI or PNG natives) only.
PNG to Indonesia easy through the land border but not "via boats".
Of course if you have your own yacht, many routes are still possible.

The Torres Strait (between Australia and New Guinea) is also a very dangerous passage for people who don't know the area well.

is travelling overland by myself dangerous? my girlfriend is terrified of the idea that I am even considering visiting in Papua / New Guinea ~

See the PNG link in my signo on this.

I've made it from Manilla to PNG overland. No worries. Getting to Australia by sea seems impossible though. I've asked at all the shipping company offices and they don't take passengers on that route. I tried to get into the port area of Lae to ask ship captains but they've really beefed up security in PNG ports lately so that failed. I'm going to try to get from Honiara to somewhere by ship instead. And hopefully from that smewhere I can get to Australia by ship.

I thought you ended up having to buy a ticket to AU - have you refunded it?

Zachleigh, if you have plenty of time in Solomon Islands, it is worth checking the Church of Melanesia shipping warehouse (below Chester House, and across the (side) road from the Point Cruz Hot Bread shop). Their ship, the Southern Cross, makes occasional trips to Vanuatu (generally Santo or the Banks and Torres groups in the north). They do take paying passengers, and you might be lucky.

Laszlo...I ended up buying a ticket from Moresby back to Vanimo....don't think I can refund it.

Ozziegiraffe...thanks for the tip! I'll look into that!
