island hopping the south pacific

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

my friend and I are going to NZ in a few weeks and we would like to see a few of the south Pacific Islands. I know most are only accessable by air and was wondering did anyone know of any airpasses that allow you to visit maybe 3 or 4. If it worked out too expenive prob will- a dream would be to visit Bora Bora any suggestions on how to get there for a resonable price by air and any nice hotels for same. If you are gonna go there you have to stay somewhere nice live the dream just not sure I have the funds .
thanks

Bora Bora - fly to Papeete, Tahiti and then to Bora Bora. You can purchase an Air Tahiti airpass that allows you to visit several islands in French Polynesia.

I would suggest that you limit your island hopping within one country unless you have lots of time.

I have links to sites where you can look for accomodation in French Polynesia listed in the FAQ.

When you say you are visiting New Zealand, visiting from where...?
We got a r-t-w ticket last year from UK, £1,250 each, a slimmed down version of the Air Alliance deal, used only Singapore Airlines (and Silk Air), Virgin Atlantic, and Air New Zealand, but the Air NZ allowed a flight from Aukland to Tahiti, then we had to get our own flight from there to Cook Islands (about £120 I think?), then picked up the r-t-w ticket again to Los Angeles...
As noted by the last post, you can get island passes around French Polynesian Islands:

Otherwise from Tahiti, you can get a fairly regular speedy ferry to Moorea.
Of the 'not-honeymoon' hotels on Moorea, nicest looked to be Les Tipaniers, nice beach, nice bungalows...

On Bora Bora, nothing's cheap really, especially anything bungalow-like, but we stayed at the Novotel, and it was really nice; clean airy rooms, nice pool and cool little beach spot, good value (in Bora Bora terms) all round...

I agree, try to include an island group on the way down or the way back to NZ. Which one will depend on where you are starting from.
