| justine40914:49 UTC30 Apr 2007 | I need a recommendation for where to stopover on the way to New Zealand. I plan to spend 1-2 weeks just relaxing enjoying the beach, swimming, possibly taking surf lessons. I'm a 24 year old female traveling alone, so I would like to stay at a backpacker hostel where I can meet other travelers. I will be on my way from California to New Zealand for a year of working holiday, am just hoping to relax somewhere tropical before arriving in New Zealand.

The surfing is pretty intense there and lots of inexpensive places to stay. The other natural stopover is Tahiti. The best surfing is on the big island but it's expensive to eat in Tahiti. There are some small pensions to stay at as well. You might check out the Lonely Planet guide to these destinations for lots of info! There is no surfing in the Cook Islands, which would be the other natural stopover. I think it would be the best place to go to meet other single travelers though, great beaches, a kicked back atmosphere, easy to get around, and inexpensive. Hope this helps!
sunny regards, shully

Then you can continue to Tahiti to enjoy safe beaches on Moorea. Again camping (Camp Nelson) is quite cheap way to stay longer in paradise condition. Then arrive to NZ for some rain.
