islands to escape from tokyo civilization
hi there,
i've been living in tokyo for 4 months already, and i'm gonna stay here for one more year (maybe more). my question is direct: where (island preferably) can i go to escape tokyo super civilization? i mean, i'm looking for islands (i just love islands) in the pacific (even the fijis down south are ok) that are just not so developed, with beautiful landscapes, not so touristic....i mean, a little bit wild (but not as wild as with nobody there), the kind of places you meet interesting backpackers but not package tour groups ;)

places like this i've liked: togian islands in indonesia, south of koh tao in thailand, gilli air and gilli meno in indonesia, praia da pipa and jericoacoara in brazil (like 6 years ago, don't know how it's now), tofo in mozambique...so basically i'm looking for something like that....if it's in japan it's also ok, but i wouldn't like to go to a okinawa island and find there 5000 other tourists from tokyo :D

basically this is the area i'm looking for:

any recommendations? probably solo travelling again :)
million thanks :)

Solomon Islands fits most of your description. beautiful, varied, not many tourists, and culturally fascinating. The non-Solomon Islanders you will meet there are also worth meeting. Also check the address in my sig line.
As the next biggest country geographically after Fiji, is offers lots of options to the visitor, many of which are only little touched by the outside world.

1

What can I say? I vote hands down for Solomon Islands as well, but if you want/need something slightly (only slightly) more upscale there's always Vanuatu or New Caledonia.

2

The Solomons or Kadavu in southern Fiji.

3

I vote for Palau. You can get their directly on Delta or by way of Guam on Continental. Head out to Kayangel to get away from the tourists and have beautiful beaches to yourself.
