Jayapura - Vanimo - Border crossing

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi!
Im in Bali, and wanna go to Papua New Guinea through Jayapura and back. Anyone know of the recent updates on the landborder - Jayapura - Vanimo? How long time is it to uptain visa (both Indonesian and PNG? Or do you of a better way of getting into PNG from Bali?

You could fly to Darwin, Brisbane or Cairns, and get a flight from there to PNG. Laszlo knows the Jayapura border crossing, and should answer soon.

The PNG visa in Jayapura can be a pain and take a week.
Indonesian in Vanimo easy and takes a day but requires onward ticket.

WARNING - We have just been to the PNG consulate 2 days ago in Jayapura/Entrop. Since this year they do not issue tourist visa anymore to PNG, so get your visa from somewhere else. Or call up in advance as thigns change fast apparently (eventough they never picked up the phone). We could anyways extend our Indonesian visa (30 days visa on arrival) at the indonesian immigration office in Jayapura. Price is 250000 Rupiah\person. 2 working days time. Pretty efficient and without hassles.

My experience was the same-- PNG consulate in Jayapura waiting time up to a week whereas Indonesian consulate in Vanimo about 12 hours. No wonder PNG misses out on the tourist $$$. One Indonesian hassle-- if you have a visa on arrival, you'll need an extra stamp from the police in Jayapura. I was with. Swedish couple who ended up returning all the way from the order in a rented car. And there was a hefty bribe to get that stamp. And since the Indonesian border people didn't speak English, lucky I was there to translate from Tok Pisin. I had my indonesian visa from the consulate in Vanimo and it was for land entry,so I had no problems.
