Jelly Fish Lake

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hello everyone,

I am looking for more information on Jelly fish Lake. I have already contacted Sam's tours but they don't have any tours booked for the week I am going. I am flexible on dates in November.

My second question is should I book before I go or try to manage it on the ground?

What information are you looking for? If general check out Wikipedia etc: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish_Lake

You can easily book tours when you are in Palau. These tours are often combined with dive or snorkelling trips around the islands.

1

Any dive boat will be able to take you along as a snorkeler; many do the Jellyfish Lake excursion as an add-on. And there are plenty of snorkel-only operators, like IMPAC. You will be fine to wait until you arrive.

By the way, try to avoid putting on sunscreen before entering the lake, given that the chemicals are bad for the jellies. Also, there are some slippery rock-stairs to climb up, so wear sturdy shoes.

2

Good point tilow. No fins either (but the tour operator will usually tell you anyway). Wear some long-sleeve shirt if you think getting into the lake is a bit eery (although this will quickly turn to sensational). Shirt will also protect you from the sun.

Along the lines of what Cosmopolitan is recommending, a rash guard type shirt with built-in sun protection is great for snorkeling. Your back is protected and it is a lot easier than covering everything with sunscreen. You can find them on sale for as little as $20 at places like REI.
