Kiribati or Tuvalu?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Some of you have been just about anywhere. Maybe you've even been to Tuvalu and Kiribati. I'm considering to fly to one of them from Fiji, but find it hard to choose. If you've been there, which one would you advise, and why?
Haven't been to Tuvalu but have been to Kiribati. From feedback about Tuvalu there really is very little to do or see there and getting information from there is a very time consuming and slow process. Kiribati, on the other hand has more to do and is a bit more advanced in some ways to cater for the few visitors it gets. I presume that from Fiji you would go to Tarawa (flights not currently operating to Kiritimati in the east where there is bonefishing, diving, birdwatching) - cultural activity is the main interest here and just 'discovering' or exploring the island. The lagoons in some places are very nice and there is some good snorkelling to be found. Also possible to fly on to other outer islands - again cultural, snorkelling, just chilling with the locals kind of experience. From people who I know that have been to both - they would opt for Kiribati. Kiribati is a different kind of place - I enjoyed my time there and would love to go back and see more of the outer islands and North Tarawa in particular. Yes there are some 'difficult' elements to the islands largely due to the poverty there but the scenery, water, people are great and the culture too. | 1
