Lau Group islands in Fiji - experiences & getting around?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
I know Air Fiji flies to Vanua Balavu and Lakeba islands in the Lau group of Fiji. Anyone actually been there? And how to get around to other islands? Are there boat transfers, LP lists only 2 general shipping company addresses in Suva, but is it possible to move around from VB or Lakeba by boat to nearby other islands - esp. i'd be interested in the Ono-I-Lau island. These islands really seem remote, i wonder what's the reality.. -J
I spent 10 days on Vanua Balavu in September 2005. At that stage there were 2 flights a week (around 15 passengers per flight), now I believe that has been cut to once a week. Flight took over an hour from Suva. The islands are also serviced by a freighter that is supposed to run every couple of weeks but the schedule is often delayed - so yes, by our standards they are remote. When we were there the boat was delayed 10 days & by then the local store had run out of nearly everything. You could travel from island to island by that boat (if you want to see pictures post me an email address here or in a PM). Possible you could find a local to take you but I only saw quite small boats & the distances are long. Very quiet, interesting to note the differences with the main part of Fiji due to heavy Tongan influence. | 1
Hello, is there anyone else that has experience about this place? What about the budget, is it cheaper or more expensive than rest of Fiji? How much money would a couple need for, lets say a) 2 weeks, b) 4 weeks there? -J | 2
