I have a chance to live for a couple of years in Koror, Palau, Saipan, or Pohnpei, Micronesia. No kids yet, just me and my partner. Jobs are virtually identical, so that isn't the deciding factor. Any thoughts on where to pick and why?
One vote here for Palau. Lived there for 3 years and loved it. Amoung other things there is an active expat community, which may not sound good until you've been there for a while. Haven't been to Saipan so can't comment. One problem with Pohnepei, where I lived for a year, is that it is a mangrove island- difficult to get to the water. I have other thoughts, PM me is you'd like. What kind of a job? That can make a difference, as the politics are fasinating in Micronesia. | 1
I've only been to Pohnpei, and for a week, but it rained so much there that a week was enough for me! My brother lasted 2 1/2 years on a 3-year contract with the college there. He said that it's not uncommon for teachers to break their contracts. I don't know how he made it so long. I was fascinated by my week on the island, but much more than that and the rain and heat would have driven me nuts. I guess it helped that my brother likes to fish. | 2
Yeah- it can be really wet in Pohnpei. And it can happen fast. I remember often running into a store with sun shining bright, only to have such a down pour a few minutes later that one felt that one might drown running back to roll up the windows of the car. But- it is warm and only water. You never dry out anyway. | 3
