Update: 11.44am ABOUT 250 tourists were transferred from Mana Island Resort to nearby lodges and to the mainland after a building housing six generators caught fire last night.

Mana Island's director of finance, Shiri Singh said the fire caused a blackout on the island and has crippled the resort, which is likely to remain closed for some time.

Some 250 staff will be affected.

Damage is estimated at about $2m.

Mr Singh said an investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.

The generators provide the power that keeps the resort in operation.

'It has affected the sewerage system, water supply, coolers and everything else at the resort that runs on power,' Mr Singh said.

A board meeting is expected to be held today to discuss the incident and the future of the workers.

Mr Singh said the generators were bought from overseas and it would take about a month to have them replaced.

'In the meantime the resort will remain closed indefinitely,' Mr Singh said.

And I was going to book there today for part of our next holiday!!!
Last time I was about to book for Fiji the Coup happened that night so we went to Samoa.

We did a day trip there last September and were so impressed with the island that we decided it would rate a 1 week stay if we were to get back to Fiji. I was looking at their website just a few weeks ago, trying to decide which accommodation I would book. I wish them well with their rebuilding and hope that their employees will make out okay.
