Medical Elective in New Caledonia!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

G'day

I'm hoping someone has been to New Caledonia/Nouvelle Caledonie and can offer some advice as to where is good and cheap to stay for a few months, and the liklihood of being able to get some sort of work there? I am a medical student from Scotland, I speak at survival level french and would quite like to get a job as I can envisage the my hospital time going pretty badly.

Any help / advice would be magic, I have not yet found anyone who has ever been there.

Thanks

Stew

I assume you will be in Noumea?
The only really cheap place to stay there, if you need to find your own, is the youth hostel which is excellent.
All the young French who go to New Caledonia to look for work seem to be staying there until they get set up, so I guess it should be all right for you, too.
Good luck with finding work, I'd imagine you need to speak decent French to compete with all those "metros" looking for it too, but you might find something in the tourism sector...
