Mel-Cairns or Syd-Cairns in 2 months with 2 kids

Hello,
This is our 3rd try to fligh to Australia (our children went ill, one after the other..). We´ll be there from early March to the May the 3rd.
As there are only 2 months left, we decided not to start at Ade. but at Mel or Syd.
What do you think is the best? Where are the most exciting sceneries, flora etc..
We are travelling around in a Mobilehome.

Another question: Would you do an 1 or 2- nights stopover in Sing? (flight Frankf-Sing: 12h; Sing-Mel ca. 7h). As we don´t want to waste more time we decided to book a "not-stop-flight", that means a 2 to 4 h stopover at Sing.
