Mobile Phone Network — South Pacific

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi everyone,

I'll be travelling across the Pacific Ocean from Vanuatu to South America and was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to buy a local mobile phone that would work across all the islands? We want to avoid having to buy new SIMs for every country we visit.

Any help would be great. Thanks very much.

Of course a single phone will work everyhere, but going all the way with the same SIM card would result in expensive roaming charges.
I would (and did) buy a new local SIM in most countries I spent more than a few days in.

I had no connection in French Polynesia

You'll just have to buy a new sim in each country, but a prepaid sim itself is usually cheap. Besides, it's always useful to be able to access the internet where wi-fi is not available. If you're visiting a lot of islands the main challenge will be to use up your credit exactly upon moving on to the next country.

Thanks very much for all the response and suggestions guys.

Cheers!
