Muri Beach Motu's

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hey... I'm going to Rarotonga on Tuesday, and I have been doing some research via an older lonely planet on Raro & Cook isl...

There are four Motu's by Muri Beach (Motutapu, Taakoka. Koromiri and Oneroa). It mentions that at low tide you can wade out to Koromiri. But I'm having trouble actually finding any information on these Motu's. Can you actually visit these motu's? Can you get to them via boat? Can you hire a sea kayak and kayak out there?

If anyone has anymore information on it would be a great help.

Also if anyone has any must sees or other advice on Raro would be great to hear it.

Thanks!

Very jealous! Yeah you cen get out to the motus by swimming, kayaking or Captains Tamas boat ( which is outside the sailing club). If you havent got anywhere to stay can highly recommend Varas, been there a number of times.

Enjoy!

You can wade over at low tide, swim over, or rent a kayak at Captain Tama's or Muri Beach Club Resort. Have a great trip!

Got married on koromiri. Had people cheering us on from Sails restaurant.

Really easy to get to them all as mentioned above.

I was able to walk to Oneroa and Koromiri at low tide.
Took a kayak or snorkelled at other times.

The first two, from the north---Oneroa and Motutapu---are not often cleaned of their downed coconuts, so they get a lot of mosquitos, as mozzies breed in old coconuts.

Koromiri, the third one, is cleaned almost daily, so very few mosquitoes. It's also very nice and picturesque, thus the reason for lots of weddings. Nice sandy beach on the inland side.

Ta'akoka is the furthest south. It'snot really a coral islet, it's a volvanic outcrop from the main island. so, it is higher and rockier, and not that inviting to walk on. Two or three pocket beaches about 20 ft across, but lots of mozzies. The best snorkeling on Rarotonga is between Ta'akoka and the main barrier reef.

There is a little hidden "hot tub" on Ta'akoka at high tide. Go to the rocky side, in the passage towards the ocean. Then crawl back up over the surrounding coral rocks towards the island itself. There is a set of coral rocks that are about 3 ft lower than the rest, it's about 10' by 10'. At high tide it fills up like a nice big hot tub!

Enjoy yourself! And remember not to make too much noise after about 11pm, there are lots of locals who live near Vara's, etc., and most have to get up by 7am to get to work.
