Muri Lagoon - Rarotonga

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hey everyone,
I've just read a recent article in Fodors that states Muri Lagoon is home to Rarotonga's sewage dump, where raw sewage flows out into the tranquil beauty of the lagoon. Hmmmm...kind of disturbing, I wonder if anyone on the ground can out my fears to rest please?
Cheers
Phil

This story seems to resurface every few months. Sewage on Rarotonga does not empty into Muri Lagoon. A couple years ago there was a problem with locals who were raising pigs, with waste from the pigs washing into creeks and after rains into the lagoon. Since that time the problem has been addressed and for the most part eliminated. I assure you that the water in Muri Lagoon is of superior quality to most lagoon water in the South Pacific.

Absolute lie. As Mike said, some pig runoff went into most streams on Rarotonga. There is actually no stream right on Muei Beach anyway, it's a mile north. But that problem was basically solved for the most part two or three years ago. I was in it most days for 12 years, never found it anything other than clean, except after the rare cyclone led some mud from streams leading into the lagoon (maybe once every four yrs.).

there was a more serious problem on the south coast, in Titikaveka, the beach was shut down for a few weeks, but that was maybe four yrs ago, no problems since then.
