Need help planning trip to Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hello everyone, I need a bit of help planning my next trip. You guys have done a great job in the past hooking me up with some great details that led to awesome trips. First off a bit of background about the travelers. It will be myself and my wife traveling, I'm 27, she's 25 and we both love to do anything outdoors, including hiking, fishing, and especially SCUBA diving. Our last trip was to Belize and we loved it, not touristy at all, great diving and awesome culture. We are sort of looking for the same this go around, great diving, not touristy and plenty to do. We are looking to go to Fiji for the next trip and are looking to go in May-June for somewhere between 15-20 days. I have done a lot of research but there is just so much info that it's hard to narrow it down. I was thinking about flying into Nadi, then head to Beqa lagoon to do the shark dive and then head to Taveuni for more diving and whatever else you recommend, then on to Kadavu and maybe finish up in the Mamanuca group for some relaxation. This was just a rough idea and any info is helpful as far as what to do, where to dive, who to dive with, where to hike, where to eat, where to stay, and how long to stay. As far as accommodations go, where not in need of a 5 star resort but we do like to come back to a nice room at the end of the day. Thanks again for all the help!

I think you've already picked the best places yourselves.
If it proves to be a bit too much for 15-20 days, skip Kadavu.

Taveuni is a must for a combination of great hiking and OK beaches.
Maybe you could exchange the Mamanucas for one of the larger islands in the Yasawas, like Nacula or Waya, for more hiking possibilities alongside good beaches.
You could also do some hiking on the main island of Viti Levu itself - the beaches there tend to be poor though.

Mai Dive has a great dive operation on Ono, in the Kadavu group. The Naqoro pass on the Astrolabe Reef has great pelagic life there due to the currents sweeping through, the coral is good; best diving I've done in Fiji so far! They have very nice accommodation, and the kokoda (fish salad) was divine! I found it to be a very special, untouristy area.

I'd agree with Laszlo for choosing Yasawas over Mamanucas. It's easy to island hop on the Yasawa Flyer. Octopus Resort on Waya (in the Yasawa group) has another good dive op and a range of accommodation possibilities, the beach is gorgeous and interesting hiking. Really enjoyed my stay there!

On Nacula, Oarsman's Bay has pleasant accommodation, and a few walking options from what I remember. There are a few other options in the area, depending on your price range. I dived with West Side Watersports- it's a few years since I was there though.

Sorry, doesn't seem to be an editing option... Final paragraph should read "On Nacula, Oarsman's Bay has pleasant accommodation". Link goat lost in cyber space. I'll try again:

Oarsman's Bay

Ok people, I have had lots of good advise thrown at me and I came up with a basic plan I believe. Please let me know what you all think. My biggest concern right now is having stuff to do outside of diving. I very much love to dive but also like to do things outside of diving that will keep me entertained everyday. I like the non tourist areas but at the same time I do enjoy going into town and having places to eat, drink and socialize. That is also a concern for some of the resorts. I have heard a lot about Naigani resort but I'm concerned that I may just run out of things to do there outside of diving. I truly have ADHD and need to be active, not just sit on a beach. That is where you all come in since I have never been to these places. Of course, the main activity would be diving so I do want to go to the best sites(and hopefully knock off the Hammerhead bucket list item) but I'd day I will probably only dive 4-5 days out of every week. So here is the plan, and please feel free to break it down and adjust it, like I said I like relaxation but I still need things to do and need to have places to socialize.

Arrive in Nadi
5-7 days at Uprising Resort in Pacific Harbor(They have a stay 5, pay 4 special that includes zipline and rafting)
Shark Dive and possibly Beqa Lagoon dive

5-7 days at either Coconut Grove or Nakia on Taveuni
DIVE!!!!

5-7 days at some other location, and at this point I really have no clue where. Like I said I want things to do, great dives are for sure but even hikes, city exploration or whatever else might be fun.

All of things are negotiable, I just did a bit of research on trip advisor and so on and some of the resorts are just too pricy and these looked fair. If they are horrible, please tell me, if the area is horrible, please tell me. I'm still planning so anything goes! Thanks everybody.

Off the top of my head I'll suggest Coral View Resort in the Yasawas. The Yasawas are a must for any Fiji itinerary - and Coral View is right on the Blue Lagoon which is one of the more scenic areas around - but the emphasis at most resorts tends to be on sitting in a beach with a cocktail and a book. This spot takes its activities quite seriously, which might fit the bill for you.

My only reservation here would be the quality of the diving for you. The Yasawas are decent diving but do not host Fiji's best sites. If diving is #1 better to look to Kadavu (astrolab reef) or Northern Viti Levu (Nananu-i-Ra/Vatu-i-Ra passage) after you finish up with Taveuni, although I don't think either of those spots are hotbeds of apres-diving activity.

There is no city/town life anywhere in the Yasawas or Mamanusas.
I would say for a combination of urban life a hiking, but minus the beaches and diving, spend those 5-7 days split between Suva and Levuka (on Ovalau).
These would give you a good taste of "big city" and small town life in Fiji, a good range of historical attractions, and access to decent hiking in nearby interior/mountainous areas.
They would also be an easy add-on to your stay at Pacific Harbour.

If you're adventurous, a trip up to the above-mentioned Nacula in the northern Yasawas provides good diving (Blue Lagoon Resort is great and goes to a few good spots) and hiking- there's a track that crosses the spine of the island, takes 3-4 hours and goes through three pretty villages from the resort. I could send pictures from the hike, if you'd like. The village at the end of the hike, Navotua, has accommodation (its basic but clean, and the people, being much farther removed from tourism, are very genuine and hospitable). It would be a good cultural experience if you're interested in that, but you'd need a guide (probably wouldn't cost much- $10-20 Fijian) and the accommodation in Navotua was $40/person including meals when I was there last. There are all sorts of beaches, small islands, and reefs to explore in that area. I lived there for a couple years and can highly recommend it as one of the most beautiful places I've ever been- and quite different from the rest of Fiji that I saw.
