New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu - places of interest & money matters

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi Guys

We're a family of four (2 boys 14 & 7), we're visiting these places in November on a cruise and we will be stopping at Isle of Pines, Noumea, Port Denarau, Dravuni Island, Suva, Mystery Island and Vila... the problem is we only have one day at each port, so we would really appreciate some advice on the "must do"s to make the most of each place. We love hiking (so probably go hiking on Isle of Pines), the boys will probably like canoeing or kayaking... so basically the essential questions are:

  1. do we need to pre book anything, or can we just turn up?

  2. is public transport advisable (given the time restriction), or should we book rental cars?

  3. do we need to change money in advance or is it possible to draw money from ATMs?

Many thanks!

Depending on time, I would suggest going to the Sebeto Hot/Mud pools when you arrive in Denarau. Its about a 30 min taxi each way, past the Nadi airport. You need old swimmers! You can go jet boating at Denarau also. Tandem Sky diving is very popular from Nadi. Check out Adrenelin Water Sports. In Suva, again depending on time there are several options, Pacific Harbour (45 min drive) has Zip Lining (flying foxes through the trees) and rafting. You will need FJD if you arrange your own transport. Negotiate the price before you get in a taxi. Suva has good market shopping just don't tell anyone your name. You can get money from the ATM at Port Denarau and in Suva.
