New Ireland/New Britain solo traveler needs help

How is it traveling to New Ireland in PNG independently? Can I arrange things with local people, such as boat trips, homestays, local food, snorkeling trips? (I have my own gear) Can I get lots of fresh seafood everywhere? Is it easy to get boats to the outlying islands? Will I be able to get rides on my own?

Is there anywhere with great snorkeling right off the beach? Any ideas on cheap flights would be appreciated too.
