Niue Forges OnCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Niue is finally getting its act together in the promotion of this unique island with the help of several million dollars over the next few years from New Zealand. This will go into promotion, infrustracture and a boost in a variety of visitor accommodation to about 350 beds. There is still only a one week flight from Auckland but that looks like it may change from April next year. Applications for landing rights by Chathams Tonga and Interisland Airways (American Samoa) have also been made. Check out a great article from the New Zealand Herald here . And for heaps of information with regular updates check out the Niue Island Facebook page
I have a better solution for Niue's woes... Rather than trying to promote tourism, why don't they develop the island as a standing venue for the 1st world's G8/G20 summits?... I really don't think cities like Toronto and Seattle should be hosting them anymore... Chaos, violence, anarchy and this last one cost the Canadian taxpayer over 1$ billion.... Crazy stuff. Just think... No protesters, no violence no anything... A safe place for the masters of the universe to collaborate and dream up more ways to get more carbon into the atmosphere and milk the 3rd world... | 1
Wow Island Boi, that is certainly radicle. And they did host the The South Pacific Forum meeting in 08 without a security scare except when it was reported that a humpback whale was attached to some kind of satellite aquaphone, that detected the lies that all super-bureacrats tell. But we are pushing the beaucrats limits by suggesting they put a 8 x 6 metre fibreglass uga (coconut crab) next to the exit road from the airport. I actually research this and came up with quotes which I handed into the tourism department. You know Island Boi, Niue has a lot of Idiosyncrasies, but I think a gigantic uga, placed strategically in Niue's gateway, would provide something that would resonate in all visitor's pshyci for ever. Especially children's. You know, at the moment, some 40% of visitors are those that come all the time. Draw conclusions on that. Mum and I just came back from a 65 day, 10,000km road trip through Southern Europe (Kosovo was the highlight) and now we are back to tell everyone how lucky we are.. Niue isn't too bad. | 2
They are decommissioning the Big Prawn at Ballina, in Australia. Maybe Niue could make an offer? | 3
Best thing is that the city I live in gets rid of Mark Blumsky. | 4
Thanks for the Big Prawn article Ozzie. Such giant icons are the epitomy of kitsch but who cares. Doesn't quite look like a coconut crab but I'll download the image to help promote our idea. Haven't met Blumsky yet Sneaker. Heard he was a mate of Peter Jackson's so I broached the idea that we should lease the white elephant fish factory to Weta Studios with a tax break. Maybe even film Jackson's next big block buster here. | 5
