non-touristy Fiji in three days?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

My husband and i will be in Fiji for three days early Feb, on route.
We do not like big hotels AT ALL; and would love to enjoy the local atmosphere of Fiji.
we are an older couple, so we like some pampering....
can we find some local B&B or small quaint hotels? we can rent a car or take a taxi as recommended.
i've read many of the recent posts but felt that there is a great deal of discrepancies in the postings
as to what/where is local and midrange but still bestows a taste of the famous Fiji islands

thank you for informations

Fly to Levuka and stay in the Royal Hotel.

Laszlo, whilst Levuka is a good choice, I'm not sure if it is so good if you only have 3 days due to connections, airport waiting etc

2

Besides, arent the flights costly?

3

just go somewhere in the mamanucas which will be island life rather than Fiji/3rd world life is you want nice with a little pampering, see trip advisor.com for area hotel choices and reviews

4

for 3 days somewhere on one of the Mamanucas will be fine, review first as some are way more touristy than others, ignore the experts in here and at the resorts ;)

Flights within Fiji are pretty cheap by Pacific standards, and one can always escape from Levuka via Suva just a few hours away overland) if necessary.
I guess this is as remote as one can realistically hope to get in 3 days.

Mamanucas?!?!? LOL!
There's no place in Fiji further removed from non-touristy local life than those resort islands!

Where's the homestay guy?

Haven't been on TT for a long time, but I am still around.
Thank you Laszlo for recommending Levuka... however, unfortunately things are changing and due to Pacific Sun problems flights to Levuka are down to 2 per week...unless the demand is rising...don't forget.. there is a ferry too. ( right a bit a long trip for 3 days)
Still for everyone who has a bit of time it will be still worth exploring Ovalau. A wonderful Levuka Homestay, a great experience at Bobo's Farm, fantastic reefs to dive at, wonderful beaches around Caqalai and Leleuvia. A warning.. this is Fiji as it used to be... so no fancy resorts, no animations, not many tourist, but friendly Fijian smiles.
