One day on Tongatapu

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi Guys
We have a day to spare on our way home from Tonga. We will be flying into Tongatapu from Ha'apai on a Friday evening and leaving the country on the Saturday evening.
We were thinking about getting a hire car, finding a good backpackers or guesthouse for the night and cruising around for the day checking out the sights.

Do people recommend this? What to see and where to stay? Do we need a car or is Tongatapu easy and small enough to get around on a scooter?

Any advice at all is appreciated..... we will be there this weekend!

Cheers

Depending on how fit you are, you could rent a bike and ride around and see the island. We did that and had a fantastic time. The Mapua' a Vaca blowholes are probably the most spectacular in the Pacific and it is well worth taking part of a day to wander out along the path that leads to a small secret beach near the western end of the blowholes. Try and time your visit to high tide for the most drama.
