One Week in Vanuatu

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi Guys,

Due to work contrainst this year, my wife an I are looking for a fun and short getaway. We are picking between Vanuatu and Fiji.
I will admit to not have picked up an Lp guidebook yet, but wanted a rough idead as to whether it is worth the effort.
From reading some other posts, it appears different islands cater to different tastes.
Whilst beaches and scuba would be great - the Volcano sounds like a must see. Would a week be enough to do a little on both?
Note: we are young and love active holidays.

Thanks for the help.

One week would be fine in either place if you limit yourself to not trying to cover too much. I would suggest basing yourself on Efate. I would definitely recommend a side trip to Tanna to see Mt.Yasser. This could be done as a day trip but would be better for a 1 or 2 night stay over. There are diving and snorkeling tours on Efate and some other day tours to attractions you could reach yourself is so inclined. If you decide against Tanna you could head to Santo where there is quite a lot of diving. If you decide to go to Tanna I would suggest you have your flights booked as soon as possible as it is a popular route and often sells out. We used the services of Melanesian Tours for our bookings.
With regard to Fiji, here again - settling on only one or two areas would be best. You could just stick with the Mamanucas or the Yasawa Islands out of the Nadi area. Or you could head for Ovalalu(sp?) Island with the possibility of heading off to one of smaller islands next door. Either way, you will have no problem finding snorkeling/diving opportunities and /or adventure activities in either Vanuatu or Fiji. Good luck with your planning.
