Ontong Java Atoll

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi All

Myself and my partner are planning a trip to Vanuatu, Solomons and PNG beginning in August.

We have found thorntree and your good selves to be a great source of information so thanks to everyone for that!

As part of our trip we would like to visit Ontong Java, which will probably be end Sept/Oct by then, but we're struggling to find any information for getting there and away. I've seen in older posts that transport connections are few and far between, is this still the case?

Thanks guys!

Ann and Dean

transport connections are few and far between, is this still the case?

I bet it is, given the remoteness and small population.
I'd be interested in hearing myself if things have significantly improved since I was in the Solomons and OJ locals said their island only got a boat every 2 weeks or so.

I'm sure OG will know more...

What do you mean, every 2 weeks or so? It is more like 3 months. When I went there, we met friends who had been there 3 months since the last ship, and nothing much has changed.
Ann, I have sent you a PM with more specific information.

That's what my Ontong Javan hosts (who ran the Travelers Rest House in the Fijian Quarter) in Honiara told me.
Maybe they were optimistic! :-)
I actually suspected so given that even Renbel, a whole province, was lucky to recieve a monthly sailing.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I'll let you know if we have any luck!

Lau Lagoon and South Malaita are roughly fortnightly - Ontong Java and Tikopia, and even the rest of Temotu, are both rare and unusual.
Occasionally, things improve, when a local member of Parliament provides services, but they never last.
