Ouvea Accommodation

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi,

I'm off to New Caledonia next week. I've only 6 days but am hoping to spend 3 days in Noumea + 3 days in Ouvea.
Is it possible to turn up in Ouvea + find some accommodation or do I need to book in advance?

Any recommendations gratefully accepted. I'm not fussy - just looking for something basic (a case, or a basic shack on the beach). Not over-enthusiastic about the idea of camping as I don't want to have to bring my tent with me, but would prefer this to a fancy 5 star hotel. Basic is usually more fun - I'm travelling alone.

Also, if anyone has dived here + can recommend a dive school, I'm very excited at the description of lots of pelagics - seeing a manta ray would really make me happy :)

Thanks,

Cat

Also - does anyone have any experience with Air Caledonie internally. Are their estimated arrival times reliable?

Depending on the way I plan my trip, my flight from Ouvea - Noumea will arrive at 10.50 and my flight leaving Noumea to Vanuatu leaves at 12.15. So I will only have 25 min to land + check in. I travel light so will only have carry-on luggage but I'm guessing this little time is unrealistic?

You may also have another much greater problem than just the short time period between flights. Most likely the internal flight is into Noumea's domestic (Magenta) airport, whilst the flight to Vanuatau is likely from the International (Tontouta) one - they are at least 1.5 hours apart by road.

You should check where the flights go/land and also allow for checkin etc - maybe you need to overnight in Noumea to make this work.
