Pacific Island hopping - Diving recommendationsCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
I have 8 weeks off between June and August and planning an island hopping adventure through the Pacific (mostly the northern part). My itinerary is pretty fixed which allows for at least a week in each country/place with the exception of Hawaii, but I would really like some recommendations on dive sights, or things to experience whilst in these places. My itinerary is as follows: Leave Fiji for Kirimati Kirimati to Honolulu (1 day in Honolulu, been before) Honolulu to Majuro, Marshall Islands Majuro to Guam Guam to Yap/Chuuk, Micronesia Micronesia to Koror, Palau Palau to Singapore (Home) I have extensively researched the itinerary and have a super cheap price given the amount of flights I'm taking. If you can give advice on places to see it would be greatly appreciated. I realise for some this may be too quick but this is all the time I have before heading back to work. I'm also looking for others to join if your interested, dive enthusiasts or just wanting to see a different area of the world on a good price. I recently got the diving bug after being to East Timor, amazing. Please feel free to contact me if your interested in joining etc. Thanks in advance. Davo
You are basically sticking to Micronesia, so this excellent book would fill you in with most of the diving info you need. Mind you, it struck me as a bit strange that with diving your priority, you decided to bypass the very countries with the richest marine biodiversity in the Pacific: PNG and the Solomons as well as Indonesia and the Philippines. | 1
Federated States: In Yap, visit Jan at Yap Divers (run through Manta Ray Bay Hotel). They have dive/hotel packages available. Jan is extremely knowledgeable, very safety-conscious, and will help you see some spectacular sights. All the divers stay at Manta Ray Bay, but look into Pathways if you prefer a bungalow. Note that seeing mantas can be hit or miss. We didn't see any during the 4 days that we dived (including 2 trips to their cleaning station) where a snorkeler posted a few weeks ago that he saw several on his first trip out. Go figure. Don't miss the Marina Restaurant--they often have local crab on the menu at a reasonable price. Also don't miss the local lemonade, made from a strange citrus fruit. (Longer Yap report from last summer: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1931231). In Chuuk, make sure you stay on a live-aboard or in one of the well-regarded resorts. Do not venture out. Google "chuuk" and "violence" if you don't believe me. I haven't been there myself, but heard several stories from divers and non-divers while in Yap. Palau: Palau diving is spectacular and extremely expensive for foreigners ($120 for 2-tank dive, gear not included). I dove with Fish N Fins and wasn't happy with how many divers they were cramming on a boat with 1 divemaster nor was I happy with them taking me to an advanced dive spot when I was a novice an expressly asked to not be sent to it due to very strong currents. I would check out Sams instead. Palau is an incredible country, so I would encourage you not to spend your entire time on a live-aboard, but to meet the wonderful locals and get a chance to learn about their culture. You might want to look into diving out of Peliliu if you (a) are interested in WW2 history--the island is full of remains of landing vehicles, planes, and bombed buildings and (b) want a shorter boat ride to some great advanced dive sights. I couldn't dive from there because I was newly-certified, but I adored the island, which was full of friendly people. Note there are cheaper dive operators then Sams in Palau, but locals can tell you hair-raising stories of divers who were left behind and eaten by sharks. I'm not making this up. If you go with a smaller diving place, ask the locals first what the dive shop's reputation is. Have a fantastic trip! I am jealous of all the great places you are going. | 2
