Pacific Islands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I'm heading to China and then the Pacific Islands in March 2009 and have narrowed down my desinations to Guam, Palau or Micronesia. Does anyone have any recommendations of why I should pick one over the other two? I am in the military (the trip with be a post-deployment R&R trip), so I should be able to utilize Guam's Air Force Base ammenities. I would like to SCUBA at least some of the days, but will be taking my mother who does not dive. Have looked into a Live-Aboard, but with a non-diver I'm think the expense is too great. It would be for about a week. Flying from China (Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong) to Guam, then a hop to our final destination (if it's not Guam). Back to the US after that.

Was trying to find some sort of all inclusive deal, but nothing popping up out there?!

Any ideas on the location, dive centers and/or accomodations?
Thanks!!

I've only been to Guam of those three. Nice island, friendly people. If you only have a week it would be a good choice. there is some diving, I think it's mainly off the SW. Main harbor area is on the W. It's easy to get around.

Not sure what military bases are still open. I stayed at one that was closed, and was used for int'l athletes for the 1999 PI Mini-Games (Island olympics).

Tumon Bay is the main tourist area, mostly (99%) Japanese honeymooners! So, maybe book a "honeymoon" package, but with two beds instead of a king-size one like they get! Very good deals out of Tokyo, from what people told me. Not sure about from Hong Kong, maybe good deals from Manila, there is a strong connection between the Philippines and Guam.

Hi- Micronesia includes a lot of islands- Palau, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnepi= anyway. Welcome back, or almost welcome back. I would recommend Palau and Yap- the diving in Palau is amazing. And there is a lot there for non-edivers- including snorkeling that is nearly as wonderful. Splurge on the Palau Pacific Resort or stay in the Carolina which allows you the pool and beach of the resort, and your mother will love you forever. From that spend a few days in Yap- manta ray diving which is unmatched, and a still intact culture that is worth seeing. Hire a local guide to take you through the local villages. You will both have a wonderful time and then back to the US- and again, welcome back home.

waldos sure knows what he's talking about. I'm from Palau and I do recommend u take ur momma there.
Diving is great and Sam's tour crew will provide ur mom a nice beach to have a picnic, take pictures or just read and relax. My country is very diversed and the cuisine there is excellent. The night life, awesome, dance the night away. Pls go visit the state capitol, nice ride and beautiful scenery.
